How We Walk Each Other Home

The reference points of my identity got stripped when I let go of all of my possessions and things that felt like “home” to move to California. I’m trying to find a home in a new state that beats with a pulse that isn’t mine. I can still feel the echoes of my East coast self. And I don’t know if I should silence the sound or see through its subtext. In a house of mirrors, reflection isn’t always what I want to see.

But I still stare.

The Pacific is nothing like the Atlantic. It’s colder and I haven’t yet warmed up to its many moods. I’m learning how to ease into its icy grip. I step barefoot into a wave and it feels like home. And that’s when I realize: I’ll need to make a home out of the ebb of its waves.

It’s not an easy process. Here are some thoughts that help to get me through:

1. See yourself within the bigger landscape

“Life is like a landscape. You live in the midst of it but can describe it only from the vantage point of distance.” – Charles Lindbergh

We live in a world of discursive, endless thoughts. And many people think this means that we need to capture everyone’s attention everywhere all of the time. It means the opposite because it’s opposite year.

Don’t just create “noise” with your knowledge. Silence is sexy too. Give people a reason to care.

To do this, we must change our mindset (through meditation, nature, yoga), to see the experience of being human from a higher level. When we recognize that we are all the same, we see how the collective unconscious is bumping up against the same “stuff.”

Marketers who focus on the small stuff often get stuck on “B2B” or “C2C.” This is “tactical broadcasting” from a myopic viewpoint. When activists operate this way it becomes moral outrage, which psychologists show is self-serving.

Can we be proactive without bringing false attention to things that don’t actually matter?

Before we put any more energy into “stuff,” see yourself within the bigger landscape. Love requires action. But let’s not forget how we got here.

Paint a bigger landscape with more wide, open space to breathe.

2. Alienate yo’self

“Sanity in this culture, requires a certain amount of alienation.” –Terence McKenna

Don’t alienate yourself to become ignorant (ignorance is not bliss). Alienate yourself to open your mind so that you can see the bigger picture of what’s happening on planet Earth.  Alienation allows us to access the higher sensory perception to everything around us.

When we stop plugging into the Matrix, we realize that we have a choice as to which pill we choose.

Before we slide through another version of reality, we must understand that it’s not only the color of our content that matters – it’s the context of the red or blue reality that we choose.  The content that we create can act as a catalyst for cultural change – not only within your own company but for the collective as a whole.

Alienation is necessary to get here.

3. Make the darkness conscious

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

   – Carl Jung

Bring the darkness to light in the only way that you can. Tip: Don’t look at how others are doing this.

4. Be willing to serve

In an article in The New York Times, Leonard Cohen says:

“That ‘hineni,’ that declaration of readiness no matter what the outcome, that’s a part of everyone’s soul. We all are motivated by deep impulses and deep appetites to serve, even though we may not be able to locate that which we are willing to serve. So, this is just a part of my nature, and I think everybody else’s nature, to offer oneself at the critical moment when the emergency becomes articulate. It’s only when the emergency becomes articulate that we can locate that willingness to serve.”

The spiritual war that is happening on Earth is real. And serving is how more light gets in.

Let go of your “identity.” You’re bigger than any label. Sublimate your personality to your higher power to remember why you are here: to share your heart and to touch people in a real way.
